Title: When the Mayhem Calms Down
Prompt: Even though it hurts him to admit, Mike's bothered by the kiss Claire and Chuck shared. He goes and talks to Chuck about it. Details are up to the author; Mike can be jealous, hurt, whatever... it can be fluffy or angsty or raunchy... I just want some aftermath that involves Mike harboring feelings for Chuck!
Notes: Just going through old, unfilled prompts and seeing what I can do to fix that.
Once he finally accepted that the Terras’ gas had no side effects he could blame, Mike decided he was by far the worst best friend on Earth.
The reason being was that the kiss between Chuck and Claire made him mad.
Chuck had been on Cloud Nine for the drive home, offering only a few token whimpers as Mike had driven more recklessly than normal to try and get a scream out of him. Most drivers would’ve been thankful for the silence, but Mike liked to hear the shrieking from the passenger seat. It was like Chuck was telling him “Your driving scares me to death but I trust you” each time they went out.
So the silence definitely bothered him. Because Chuck wasn’t screaming. Because while Chuck’s body was in the car, his mind was out daydreaming about Claire. Because it wasn’t just them in Mutt anymore but Mike, Chuck, and the latter’s fantasies of the girl from Deluxe.
Seeing as how Chuck had the biggest crush on Claire, Mike felt like the King of Heels for being mad about the whole thing.
So Mike didn’t talk about it with Chuck. The disastrous Halloween was on the “Things We Don’t Talk About” list. At the very top of it, to be perfectly honest.
Well, it was until Mike found a gloomy Chuck hunched in on himself in Mike’s room. It didn’t shock him, really, to find Chuck sitting there. They’d decided a long time ago that their doors would always be open to each other. Half the time Chuck slept on a slim mattress on the floor in Mike’s room anyway, saying he slept better because the nightmares didn’t bother him as much by having Mike close by.
However, it was surprising that Chuck looked so bummed. He’d seemed especially chipper when Claire had come down with Julie earlier in the day.
“…I’m her worst fear,” Chuck said without preamble as Mike instinctively walked over to sit down beside him. “The Terra gas…you said the only way to break its effects was to face your fear. And…and she kissed me. She didn’t want to talk to me about it, but it just hit me after she left.”
Mike paused in momentary confusion, trying to get past the “she kissed me” and focus on what exactly Chuck was saying. The same epiphany that had occurred to Chuck dawned on him.
And he felt like a monster for feeling pleased by it.
“I’m sure it’s not like that,” Mike said awkwardly, trying to ignore how part of him was pumping its fists in the air and screaming his victory.
Chuck bowed his head. “I keep thinking about the stuff she said when she was hallucinating. She was saying stuff like how she wasn’t living in my car or in Motorcity. How it couldn’t be happening. Y’know, that kind of stuff.”
“Well, technically, she’s right about the first one. I mean, Blond Thunder isn’t exactly big enough to live in,” Mike said in an attempt at being lighthearted.
Judging by Chuck’s whine of misery, his joke had fallen flat.
“Sorry.”
“Nah, I know you’re trying to cheer me up. Thanks, bro.” Chuck tried to smile but it came out a bit like a grimace.
“Give her some time. She’ll come around. Eventually.”
He had a sudden desire to throw himself off of the Detroit Doom Jump when that nasty little part of himself thought with malicious glee: ‘Though I really hope not.’
“I don’t think so, bro. She’s probably got guys beating her door down in Deluxe. Better looking, smarter, stronger, and…less afraid.”
Mike wrapped an arm around his best friend. “C’mon, you’re one of the bravest people I know, Chuck. You’re scared of a lot of stuff, but you still go out and do what scares you because only you can do it. If she can’t see that, then that’s her loss.”
Chuck gave a tiny smile at that which made Mike feel like maybe he wasn’t the worst best friend ever. “…Thanks, Mike.”
“Anytime. Come on. A large pepperoni pizza at Antonio’s is the best cure for a broken heart.”
He got up from his seat and held out his hand to help Chuck. He then herded his taller friend towards Mutt, one arm wrapped around Chuck’s shoulders.
He’d sort out the jealousy thing later.
